Sculpture recalls heroin victims

A WOMAN who lost two of her children to heroin related AIDS lit a candle on a monument in Dublin's inner city last night. The beech sculpture is a temporary replacement for the Buckingham Street Christmas tree which had 67 stars, one for every heroin death in the area.

Mary Hogg's son Ben died seven years ago aged 22. Her daughter, Margie, was 36 when she died two years ago. Ms Hogg said the simple sculpture was a lovely memorial. "It means they won't be forgotten. When people pass it they'll think of them."

Artist Tony Sheehan from the Fire Station Arts Centre said locals approached him about a permanent memorial after the Christmas tree was taken down.
