Sea search for teenager resumes

A sea search for a 17-year-old missing off the coast of Donegal has resumed this morning.

A sea search for a 17-year-old missing off the coast of Donegal has resumed this morning.

It will follow a scaled-down search yesterday in poor weather conditions when one member of the Lough Swilly Coastguard was put to sea in a bid to locate Seán McNair. Other searches will cover the shoreline.

The Derry teenager went missing early on Saturday morning after going swimming with friends off Rathmullan Pier.

A 20-mile shoreline search is to be carried out today.

The Lough Swilly Lifeboat crew has appealed for as many volunteers as possible to comb beaches, headlands and rock pools for Sean McNair.

Lifeboat spokesman Joe Joyce said they needed as many local people to join the search as possible. “Low water is at 3pm. The optimum time is an hour either side of that as more beach and headland is exposed,” he said.

The search will cover shoreline from Stragill beach to Inch island on the Buncrana side of the Swilly and Muckamish point to Ramelton on the Rathmullan side.

Depending on weather conditions a dive team may also join the search.

A spokesman for Malin Head Coastguard said they were unable to use helicopter yesterday because weather conditions were so difficult.
