The Fine Gael Chief Whip, Mr Sean Barrett, has become the second Dun Laoghaire TD to say he will not run in the next general election, amid speculation that a third is also considering retirement from the Dail.

The turnover in what is considered to be the State's most liberal constituency will lead to intense competition at the next general election.

????????ail won two seats, Fine Gael won two while Mr Eamon Gilmore, now a Labour deputy, was elected for Democratic Left.

Mr Barrett's announcement of his intention yesterday follows that of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrews, earlier this year, and there has been speculation that the other Fine Gael deputy for the constituency, Ms Monica Barnes, may not run again. Ms Barnes could not be contacted for comment last night.
