A cross-Border search was under way in the northwest yesterday after a one-year-old baby boy was removed from a care home in the North by his mother, who is believed to come from the Republic.

The baby, who was in foster care under the auspices of the Foyle Health and Social Services Trust, was brought to the Harberton House children's home in the Waterside area of Derry for a meeting with his mother yesterday morning. However, staff reported the boy and his mother missing just before 11am.

A PSNI spokesman said anyone with information about the whereabouts of the baby and his mother should contact police.

"The mother is 5' 5" in height, of heavy build and when last seen had her auburn hair in a tie-back. The baby boy was wearing a grey hooded top, blue jeans and brown shoes."
