Mexico City - Heavy rain drenched soldiers yesterday searching a Mexican mountainside for more victims of the flooding and mudslides that have claimed at least 321 lives. The rain also prevented helicopters from flying to villages with desperately needed food and medicine.

Flood victims across south-eastern Mexico were angry at what they considered a slow government response. Many urged the President, Mr Ernesto Zedillo, to call for foreign aid, but he said: "The Mexicans can do it alone."

Mr Zedillo was curt with victims who crowded around him demanding aid. "Will you let me speak?" he told one man who repeatedly interrupted him, the Mexico City daily Reforma reported on Saturday.
