Members of the Garda Underwater Unit and Slaney Search and Rescue will resume the search for the body of a man in the Slaney river in Co Wexford at first light today.

Mr Jonathan Skerritt (20), of Ballymurn, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, is believed to have either fallen or been pushed into the river early yesterday.

Gardaí refused to comment on reports of a row in the town shortly before Mr Skerritt went into the river.

Several people were interviewed yesterday by gardaí investigating the circumstances of Mr Skerritt's fall, but no arrests were made.

Garda sources confirmed to The Irish Times that a number of youths were with Mr Skerritt when he went into the river at around 12.30 a.m.

A short time later a local man reported seeing a body in the river nearby. Mr Skerritt has not been seen since and is presumed drowned.

Slaney Search and Rescue immediately began a search of the river and at 1 a.m. alerted the Garda Underwater Unit in Dublin.

Garda divers joined the search at first light yesterday and worked through the day until the search was called off shortly after 7 p.m.

A Garda source said the Slaney was in full flow yesterday, with underwater visibility reduced to one or two metres because of silt being washed downriver.
