Leeds and Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane’s season is effectively over as a result of an ankle injury picked up during his sides 2-1 defeat at Highbury at the weekend. The Dubliner was on the receiving end of a crunching tackle from Gunners defender Tony Adams and had to limp out of the game.

The extent of the injury has meant that Keane, although cup-tied in the competition, could not link up with the rest of his team-mates ahead of tomorrow’s crucial Champions League semi-final clash in Valencia. He is due to receive treatment at the clubs Thorpe Arch training ground and is unlikely to figure in Leeds’ remaining Premiership games against Bradford and Leicester.

The news of Keane’s injury will have alarm bells ringing in Irish manager Mick McCarthy’s head as he may have to do without the young Tallaghtman’s services for the Republic’s crucial World Cup 2 qualifier with Portugal on June 2nd.
