A school in Belfast has been attacked by vandals in the second such incident in the past 24 hours.

A mobile classroom at Cedar Lodge school in Greencastle was raided yesterday morning, shortly after an attack at the Mount Gilbert Community College, Ballygomartin Road.

A PSNI spokeswoman said it was not thought that the two incidents were linked but appealed for witnesses to come forward.  It would not be known how much equipment was stolen until staff returned to work on Monday, she said.

Computers, furniture and doors were damaged and a CCTV camera and alarm destroyed during the overnight raid at Mount Gilbert Community College.

Three men in their late teens or early twenties were said to be responsible for the overnight break-in.  They also smashed open a drinks vending machine and stole the cash inside.

The Department of Education condemned the attack as "totally unacceptable".

A spokesman said: "All children have the right to the best education that we can provide, which includes good, modern and safe schools.

"Such wanton destruction causes distress and dismay to children, parents and teachers alike. It is everyone's responsibility in our society to condemn incidents such as these."
