A security guard was shot in the leg during a bank raid in Co Kildare this morning.

The man was taken to Naas General Hospital with a leg injury after the shooting on Clane's Main Street at about 9.30 a.m. His injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening.

Up to three raiders travelling in a grey Alpha Romeo car and a blue Transit van approached security staff outside a bank, a Garda spokeswoman said.  The security van was making a cash delivery and collecting money from the Ulster Bank.

"The Alpha Romeo was found just outside Clane a short time later," she added. The van has not yet been found and no arrests have been made.

It is unclear how much money was taken, although it is thought the raiders escaped with a number of bags.

The Garda said no arrests have been made and there is no description of the raiders available.

"The scene has been preserved for technical examination and investigations are ongoing," a Garda statement said.
