Tyrone 0-14 Westmeath 1-07:  A two man advantage in the final quarter of the game allowed Tyrone progress to the third round of the All-Ireland qualifiers but Westmeath did all in their power to thwart Mickey Harte's side in a dogged battle in Omagh.

The locals eventually won by four points but an upset looked on the cards as they wasted scoring opportunities and conceded soft frees within the range of Dessie Dolan and co.

Both sides were guilty of profligacy but Tyrone's failure to convert more than 14 from 32 chances will worry Harte.

With the game in the balance it was ultimately the dismissals of Damien Healy and Doran Harte, in the space of one second half minute, for separate incidents involving Tyrone captain Brian Dooher, that swung the advantage heavily in Tyrone's favour.

Tyrone followed the script early on and registered three points without reply, thanks mainly to the Tommy McGuigan, who struck the second and third after setting up Martin Penrose for the opener.

A soft free at the other end allowed Dolan to close the gap but Penrose returned to the favour to McGuigan and the Tyrone man got his third in 10 minutes.

Tyrone were quicker across the park and Westmeath were only allowed in again after another generous free was awarded by Armagh referee Padraig Hughes and was this time converted by Denis Glennon.

Westmeath were barely worth a one point deficit when John Smyth pointed an inch perfect effort but McGuigan was again on target and then missed a goal chance minutes later after he was set up by Sean Cavanagh.

It proved all the more costly in the 30th minute when, after Dolan had added another free, wing-back Michael Ennis latched on to Glennon's flick when ghosting in at the back-post and smashed it into the far corner of the Tyrone net.

There was worse to come for Tyrone when it emerged that Cavanagh had sutained what looked like a serious neck injury when challenging Glennon and was replaced by brother Colm, who later had to leave the field with a shoulder injury.

Sean Cavanagh's treatment took some time but when play resumed it was Westmeath who kept their cool and Dolan added another free for a 1-05 to 0-06 lead at the break.

Martin Flanagan pointed a massive free early for Westmeath but they would not score again for over 20 minutes when Glennon struck a free.

Tyrone, in contrast, upped the ante and through Davy Harte, McGuigan and two towering efforts from Enda McGinley, they moved into a slender lead.

Referee Hughes then saw enough in Healy's high tackle on Dooher and Harte's swing at the Tyrone captain to deem them both surplus to requirements on the field of play.

It took Tyrone some time to press home the advantage but, after Dolan missed a goal opportunity they wrapped up the game with a fantastic point froom Dooher, McGuigan's sixth point and efforts from Ryan Mellon and Damien McCaul.
