US officials have declined to name the man, but said he was not among the top three most wanted al Qaeda leaders: Osama bin Laden; his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri; or the group's operational leader, Khailid Shaikh Mohammed.

Earlier this month Osama bin Laden's top operative in Yemen was killed in a US missile strike launched from an unmanned Predator aircraft.

In September US and Pakistani authorities captured Ramzi Binalshibh, another alleged planner of the strikes on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon.
