A senior member of Zimbabwe's opposition who was being held in prison over murder charges, has been found dead in his cell.
Learnmore Jongwe, 28, had been in custody since July when he was arrested following the stabbing death of his wife, Rutendo, 23.
Opposition officials have demanded an independent investigation.
Prior to his surrender to police, Mr Jongwe had been the spokesman for Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party. He also was an MP for the Harare suburb of Kuwadzana.
Zimbabwe's director of prisons has told state radio that Mr Jongwe was "found dead in his cell" at Chikurubi Prison outside Harare.
However, police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena later said Mr Jongwe died in a cell containing 80 inmates in Harare central prison.
Mr Bvudzijena said Jongwe died shortly before dawn after an attack of vomiting. Cellmates had tried to render first aid, he said.
David Coltart, shadow justice minister for the opposition party, demanded an immediate independent autopsy and investigation.
Jongwe was due to appear in court on November 25th. His arrest triggered a massive state-media campaign depicting the MDC as "a violent party."
