A Meath woman who "frittered" away almost €99,000 she defrauded on clothes and perfume has had her sentence adjourned again to ascertain if she is suitable for community service.

Claire Mahon (25), Bailis Downs, Athlumney, Navan, Co Meath, was a "compulsive shopper" who forged the signatures of two colleagues on cheques made payable to herself and then wrote suppliers' names on the cheque book counterfoils.

She pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 96 sample counts of forgery and theft from her employer, Autoglass Ltd in Calmount Business Park, Ballymount Industrial Estate, Dublin 12, between February 2002 and 2004.

Judge Bryan McMahon, who had adjourned her sentence previously to allow the State consider psychiatric reports submitted by the defence, said he accepted that Mahon suffered from a traumatic event about the time her offending began.

The judge noted that only a small proportion of the money had been refunded by Mahon, but he was satisfied she had made genuine efforts to recompense the bank that had covered Autoglass's losses. He remanded Mahon on continuing bail to a later date.
