Sentence on a man who had sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl has been adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to allow the State consider the implications of this week's Supreme Court ruling.

Romanian Valintan Stan (26), Rialto, who pleaded guilty earlier to unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl aged under 15 in a flat in north Dublin on April 17th, 2003, also faced sentence for a separate crime in which he kidnapped a man to rob him.

He admitted falsely imprisoning Iosif Chelaru and robbing €600 cash, bank cards and a phone from him.

Barrister Karen O'Connor asked Judge Frank O'Donnell to adjourn the matter so that the Director of Public Prosecutions could consider the Supreme Court judgment on sex with underage girls.

At an earlier hearing, Det Sgt Denis Smith said Stan admitted he had sex with a 14-year-old girl while drinking.

Sgt Smith agreed with Niall Durnin SC, defending, the girl told Stan she was aged 18. Stan came to Ireland six years ago and has fathered two children to an Irish woman. He had eight previous convictions for road traffic and theft offences.
