A man who made up to 32 daily phone calls of a "sick and disgusting" nature to a freephone number has received a two-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Michael Hayden (34), Thornville Avenue, Artane, pleaded guilty to making obscene phone calls between September 2002 and January 2003.

Sgt Declan Farrell said Hayden had made explicit reference to sexual acts and parts of the body during the calls, which ranged from four times to 32 times a day.

The company that operated the freephone number contacted gardaí, who encouraged the employees, who were all female, to engage with Hayden in an effort to identify the perpetrator.

Sgt Farrell said Hayden gave his mobile number to one of the employees, who then arranged to meet him at a pub in Killester.

Gardaí arranged for a plainclothes garda to meet Hayden pretending to be this woman.

Hayden was arrested as soon as he approached the plainclothes garda.
