A man in Derry was left with serious injuries today after a gang of youths jumped on his head repeatedly.

A man in Derry was left with serious injuries today after a gang of youths jumped on his head repeatedly.

The attack took place in the Galliagh Park area at about 4am.

The man, who is in his 30s, was walking home with his sister when a gang of youths in a red Peugeot 306 car pulled up alongside them.

A PSNI spokesman said: "They knocked him to the ground and it is believed they continued to jump on his head repeatedly while he lay on the ground. His sister was also punched a few times."

The man was taken to hospital, where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

The youths, believed to be in their early teens and 20s, fled in the Peugeot car, although one juvenile was arrested at the scene.

Police believe the youths may have carried out a number of assaults in the area last night and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
