LISBON - Portuguese police have arrested seven people suspected of starting a fire in a discotheque which killed 13 people and was the country's most violent crime in living memory.

Police chief Mr Fernando Negrao told a news conference yesterday seven suspects had been charged in connection with the fire at the disco in the northern town of Amarante on April 16th. Five would remain in prison pending trial.

Thirteen people died and 13 were injured after masked men burst into the club and doused the walls and furniture in petrol before setting them alight. One of the suspects being held was the owner of a rival disco.
