The week that was at a glance
We now know . . .
A mere 10 minutes spent watching music videos by skinny glamorous girl bands such as Girls Aloud and the Sugababes lowers teenage girls' self-esteem, according to researchers at Leeds University.
It's easy to mistake subway stairs for an underground car park entrance. A German woman got her car stuck on subway stairs in Dusseldorf this week when she did that very thing.
Bad influence
Cruella de Vil and Cinderella's wicked stepmother have been blamed for giving children a negative image of elderly people. Disney's portrayal of older people as evil, sinister, helpless, hapless, forgetful, nosy or crazy has had a cultural impact on children, say researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah.
GAA gets tough
Some of the biggest names in hurling, including Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, face a one-month suspension arising from last Sunday's pre-match brawl as the Cork and Clare teams ran onto the pitch at Thurles's Semple Stadium. Ó hAilpín and four other Cork players could miss the Munster hurling semi-final against Waterford on June 17th, in the first test of the GAA's new, stricter disciplinary code. The Cork and Clare county boards also face €€5,000 fines for their trouble.
