Punch goes PC
A children's entertainerin London has been ordered to replace Punch's stick with a feather duster to beat Judy with. A new politically correct script has also been incorporated into the routine, with children being asked to call for the police when Punch is naughty. Entertainer Daniel Liversidge, who performs at Spinnaker Tower, has also had to remove the traditional scene where Judy is put through a mangle. Other new aspects are not as right-on. Punch and Judy fight over his love of football and her love of shopping – surely not acceptable to today's anti-sexist children.
A bird in the hand
The hummingbird is thought to exist only in the US, Canada and the Caribbean, although Birdwatch Ireland has been inundated with calls from "twitchers" who think they've seen one.
The unidentified creature has something long and pointy on its face and also rapidly beats its wings, giving the impression of hovering.
Birdwatch Ireland clarified the sightings this week, stating that the birdwatchers were actually seeing hawk moths, whose long tongues may look like beaks. Many of the reports come from the Aran Islands and coastal regions where the moths look for food after making the long journey from mainland Europe. Hummingbirds need to feed every 15 minutes, so could never fly that far.
