Crouch forgiven

Abbey Clancy, the model, TV presenter and (at time of going to press) fiancee of one Peter Crouch, is reported to be willing to forgive the Tottenham striker for sleeping with an Algerian prostitute.

Crouch, who is reported to earn £70,000 a week, was voted top of a poll of funniest sporting one-liners earlier this year for his response to a reporter who asked what he would be if he wasn’t a footballer.

Murphy on stroke

Ireland’s Gráinne Murphy, the 17-year-old swimming sensation from Wexford, finished fourth in the 800m freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Budapest on Thursday. Murphy missed out on the bronze by just five hundredths of a second. “I wasn’t even expecting to make the final,” said Murphy, who yesterday beat her own Irish national record by 18 seconds with a time of 8:25.04 in the qualifying heat for today’s 1,500m freestyle. Next up for Gráinne? Tomorrow’s 400m freestyle.
