Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan proposed to add the 6 Nations series and the European Rugby Cup to the list of "free to air" sporting events. Irish Rugby Football Union chief executive Philip Browne was quick to object, saying such plans posed the greatest threat to rugby since the game went professional in 1999, and citing the cost at €12 million annually. With Fianna Fáil deputies divided on the issue, the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, stepped in on Thursday to promise that the Government will come to "a commonsense" decision on the proposals, after a consultation process.
Master theft
Art thieves in Paris snatched five paintings worth an estimated €100 million from the city’s Musée d’Art Moderne. Paintings by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Leger and Georges Braque were discovered missing only after officials noticed a smashed window as they opened for business on Thursday. The Picasso alone, a painting called Dove with green peas (right), from the Spanish master’s cubist period, is said to be worth €22 million.
