Test for age of suspect
Scientists have developed a technique to calculate the age of a suspect using blood collected from a crime scene.
The technique utilises a characteristic of T cells – immune-system cells that recognise foreign organisms entering the body – and could even be used on dried blood samples.
The age test, developed by scientists at Erasmus MC University Medical Center in the Netherlands, is accurate to within nine years, meaning investigators could eliminate suspects based on generational categorisation.
Weeks locked in bathroom
A 69-year-old woman who was trapped in her bathroom for 20 days survived on warm tap water.
When the door to her windowless bathroom in Paris jammed, the woman tried to alert neighbours by banging on pipes during the night. They mistook the noise for construction work and began a petition to stop it.
It was only when one neighbour noticed she hadn’t collected her mail in weeks that firefighters were called to the apartment, where she was found in a weakened state.
