The week that was at a glance
Hot property
Given the crisis in the property market, prospective house-buyers might be interested in a sturdy home on a 57-acre site, with great security. It also happens to be an old nuclear missile silo. The Washington state property is for sale on eBay for just over €1 million. You wouldn't get a four-bed semi in Malahide for that.
A bit rich
All you working schmoes will have been delighted to hear that one in eight of the country's top 400 earners paid less than 5 per cent in tax last year. Even more galling, three of those paid no tax at all. That latter figure, according to the Revenue Commissioners, was a reduction from six the previous year.
We now know:
• In the UK, glamour model Jordan's debut "novel" is outselling the entire Booker shortlistput together.
• The Rolling Stones are 2007's biggest earnersin rock music, pipping rapper Jay Z.
• Ireland is the 17th least corrupt state, according to Transparency International's latest index.
