Srinagar - Seven people were killed in a gun battle between separatist militants and security forces in the streets of Indian-controlled Kashmir's main city, Srinagar, yesterday, a police statement said.
It said two counter-insurgency police personnel, four civilians and a divisional commander of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen militant group died and six policemen were wounded in the hour-long shoot-out in the Parimpora area.
The Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, earlier known as Harkat-ul-Ansar, is a pan-Islamic militant group.
