SEVEN PEOPLE have died on the roads this weekend, including two men in a motorcycle collision in Co Kerry yesterday.
Gardaí in Listowel are investigating the crash involving two bikes near the village of Finuge.
A third man was injured and removed to Kerry General Hospital, Tralee. His injuries are not life-threatening.
The crash occurred just before 5pm on a straight stretch of road about four miles from Listowel.
Both deceased are from the greater Listowel area. One of the men was in his thirties and the father of a young family. The other man was aged 21.
It is understood one of the deceased was the driver of one of the motorcycles and the other man who died was a pillion passenger on the second bike. Both died at the scene.
In Galway, a woman in her late 70s was killed when the car in which she was travelling collided with a camper van on the R336 at Bearna road, Rusheen, at 3.45pm yesterday.
The woman, a front-seat passenger, was taken to University College Hospital, Galway, where she died.
The male drivers of the camper van and the car were taken to the same hospital to be treated for their injuries.
A male pedestrian was fatally injured when he was struck by a car on the N8 Dublin to Cork road, 3km north of Durrow, Co Laois, shortly after midnight on Saturday.
The 43-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
A man in his twenties was killed and another was seriously injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a tractor on the N25 at Ardmore in Waterford at 6.30pm on Saturday.
Prayers were offered at Masses in Ardmore yesterday for the recovery of the critically injured man, who is also in his twenties and from the area.
In a third incident a 63-year-old man died in a single vehicle accident at Cloone, Co Leitrim, at 4.30pm on Saturday. His body was removed to Sligo General Hospital.
On Friday night a man was killed in a two-car crash at Dromasta in Co Cork.
The man was in his late 30s and from the Durrus area of west Cork.
He was the driver of a car involved in a head-on collision with another car on the main road to Bantry.
Gardaí are implementing a major road safety campaign in an effort to help prevent deaths on the roads.
Extra officers have been deployed on roads for the duration of the bank holiday.
During the June bank holiday weekend last year four people lost their lives in road crashes.
