There were seven new cases of BSE discovered this week according to the Department of Agriculture.

There were seven new cases of BSE discovered this week according to the Department of Agriculture.

This brings the total number of BSE cases for 2002 to 123.

Two of the cows were seven years-of-age; another two of the cows were aged six and the remaining three were aged: eight, nine and twelve years-of-age.

Three of the infected animals came from farms in Cork, two were found on Cavan farms and two were found on farms in Meath.

Over 662,000 tests were carried out in 2001 and over 173,000 tests have been carried out this year to date.

The underlying trend in relation to the number of BSE cases disclosed remains favourable, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The total cattle population in the State is 7.6 million.

To date no animals born after 1996 have been detected with BSE and an ever increasing proportion of infected animals are six years of age or older.
