Seven policemen who allegedly killed two students at a Lagos checkpoint at the weekend have been charged with conspiracy and murder.

The court in the central district of Yaba ordered their remand in Ikoyi prison till July 15th when the case will come up again for hearing.

Police authorities have already dismissed six of the seven suspects while the fate of the seventh, a senior officer, will be determined by the police service commission.

Meanwhile, the policeman who allegedly fired the shots that killed the two students is still on the run.

Nigeria's head of police, Mr Tafa Balogun, said today day that senior officers will be held liable in the future for the murder of innocent citizens committed by their subordinates.

The order came amid a wave of public anger over a string of police shootings and an apparent culture of impunity in a force often accused of corruption and brutality.

Police manning checkpoints in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos shot dead three young students in two incidents this month, bringing condemnation from politicians and the public.
