A jury in the trial of a Dublin man charged with attempted rape was discharged shortly after the case opened at the Central Criminal Court yesterday.

Mr Justice Geoghegan told the jury of seven women and five men that there would have to be a new trial. Mr Erwan Mill Arden SC, defending, had applied to have the trial halted shortly after the alleged victim began her evidence.

The 20-year-old accused man pleaded not guilty to attempted rape and to sexual assault of the 30-year-old woman in the grounds of a Ballymun school in the early morning of January 15th, 1996.
