An Irish barman who twice jumped bail while facing a child sex abuse charge dating back 10 years has been shot dead in New York. Mr David Delaney (40), a single man from Stoneybatter, Dublin, fled to the United States after appearing in court in Dublin accused of the sex offence.

He was shot by two men while serving drinks in a Manhattan Irish bar where he had been working. Mr Delaney was charged with abusing a 13-year-old boy, the son of a neighbour, in Dublin in 1990. He was granted bail and absconded. He returned to Dublin from the US for his mother's funeral and was arrested by police at the graveside.

Later, though, he was again granted bail and once more absconded to America.

Police said a motive for Delaney's killing last Monday was thought to relate to a row that originated in the bar.
