A MAJOR exercise testing the combined response of emergency services to an aviation disaster at Shannon Airport took place yesterday. Emergency services from multiple agencies in Co Clare and the midwest region participated.

The four-hour "Exercise Rineanna" centred on a simulated crash of a Boeing 777 jet, carrying 156 passengers and 12 crew. It involved the transatlantic jet developing engine trouble, diverting to Shannon Airport and crash-landing.

Director of Services for Clare County Council Ger Dollard said the exercise was not only vital to local emergency agencies but was required by IAA regulations.

A large-scale exercise takes place at the airport every two years to keep emergency services prepared in the event of a major aviation disaster. The last emergency drill, "Exercise Eagle", took place at Shannon in 2006.
