Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will hold a summit next week, Sharon's office said today.

A statement posted on the office Web site quoted Sharon as telling Jordan's King Abdullah by telephone that "he intends to meet the Palestinian Authority chairman next week in order to advance the various issues on the agenda".

In Amman, a Jordanian palace official said that that the summit would take place on Tuesday, at Abdullah's behest.

However, Palestinian and Israeli officials said final details on the date and venue would be set when aides to Sharon and Abbas meet on Friday.

A summit had been due to take place as a follow-up to Israel's withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip on September 12 , but it was deferred because of a lack of preparation and amid a surge of violence.
