Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has fuelled speculation that striker Alan Shearer will take over as the Magpies's boss when Bobby Robson stands down.
The former England captain has made no secret of his desire to one day move into management and would be a popular choice among the club's loyal army of supporters.
Shepherd acknowledged he would be happy to see Shearer take over at St James' Park.
"I hope he becomes manager one day. I would love to see a Geordie manager here and a continuation on from Bobby Robson," he told the Daily Express.
