Boxing: Ireland's Roy Sheehan has made the round of 32 at the AIBA World Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Baku after a win over Bahamian Carl Hield.

The welterweight, from the St Michael's club in Athy, trailed after the first round but won comfortably by five after the third.

Sheehan did his best work in the second round, when he overturned the 4-3 deficit from the first landing eight scoring shots for an 11-7 lead. He then won the final round 4-3 for a 15-10 victory.

Sheehan will meet Croatian champion Borna Katalinic in the last 32 on Sunday when he will be just two wins away from qualification for London 2012.

Today’s victory came 48 hours after Michael Conlon opened Ireland’s campaign with an impressive 25-12 decision over Alexandr Riscan.

The next Irishman in the ring will be European light-welterweight champion Ray Moylette tomorrow. The Mayoman is tipped to beat Arturs Ahmetous of Latvia and set up a last-32 duel with either Valentino Knowles of the Bahamas or Manoj Kumar of India on Sunday
