The prospects of Oscar honour for Jim Sheridan, the Irish film director, and his latest film, In America, increased last weekend when he and his daughters, Kirsten and Naomi Sheridan, won the Best Writer award in the US film critics awards.

The awards, given in Los Angeles by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, are often cited as indicating how members of the Motion Picture Academy will divide the coming season's Oscars.

The final instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy received four awards from the critics: best picture, best director, best ensemble and best composer.
