A Celtic fan shot in a crowded Amsterdam bar is still recovering in a Dutch hospital.

Mr Lewis Rodden (41) is expected to be discharged in the next few days after undergoing emergency surgery for a wound to the chest.

Mr Rodden was in the Dutch city to watch his team play a Champions League qualifier against Ajax when an unknown man ran into a bar and shot him at close range.

Officers have recovered a weapon and clothing from the Damrak, one of Amsterdam's main tourist streets.

Three men are being sought over the incident, which happened at about 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, but police admitted the gunman's motive was still unclear.

Mr Rodden was wearing a green and white Celtic shirt at the time, but police say the incident is not thought to be football-related.

A spokesman for Amsterdam-Amstelland Police said: "So far, no motive for the shooting has emerged. It just happened that the victim was hit by a bullet".

The spokesman said no one noticed the shooting until three men, one of them thought to be the gunman, pushed their way outside.
