Palestinian gunmen opened fire this evening on Gilo, a Jewish settlement in annexed east Jerusalem, an Israeli army spokeswoman said.

"No one was hurt and no property damaged, as soldiers at an army post at the edge of Gilo returned fire," she said.

Shortly afterwards a second burst of Palestinian fire, this time with machineguns, was heard, Palestinian residents in the neighbouring town of Bethlehem said.

Gilo has come under heavy fire from gunmen in the nearby Palestinian town of Bethlehem since the start of the 16-month Palestinian uprising, but in recent months violence at this flashpoint has cooled.
