James Simpson-Daniels' exciting Test match career was put on hold tonight after illness ruled him out of England's Twickenham clash against South Africa next Saturday.

The 20-year-old Gloucester wing has been diagnosed with glandular fever and was officially withdrawn from duty when the England squad met up tonight.

It is a cruel blow for Simpson-Daniel who made his England debut in the 31-28 victory over New Zealand two weeks ago and then created both Ben Cohen tries when world champions Australia were defeated last Saturday.

England boss Clive Woodward is due to name his starting line-up tomorrow morning, and must now make an enforced change.

Woodward would appear to have two choices - either putting Austin Healey on the wing, or switching Jason Robinson from full-back and handing Tim Stimpson the number 15 jersey.

Robinson has experienced a couple of defensively uncertain displays in the past fortnight, and he could now find himself on the wing - especially as Healey has provided fly-half bench cover for both the New Zealand and Australia games.

Simpson-Daniel must now wait till the Six Nations' Championship - England begin their campaign against France on February 15th - for his next possible Test opportunity.
