CORK'S only independent radio station, 96FM, has been in the news recently with talk of windfalls for the owners and staff in a £28.5 million takeover by Ulster Television.

The station is guarded about the matter and has taken the advice of a public relations firm to sing dumb. The stricture, however, does not apply to one of its best known journalists, P.J. Coogan, who has decided there should be singing, takeover or not.

He and a colleague, Rose O'Neill, together with friends and the children of Rockboro School in Cork are releasing a version of What a Wonderful World, the Louis Armstrong classic, in time for the Christmas market and are hoping to raise up to £5,000 for the Children's Ward at Cork University Hospital (CUH).

"All of us involved are parents ourselves and recognise the fantastic work done by the staff at CUH. It would be nice to give something back, particularly at this time of year," P.J. said.
