The membership of the Sinn Féin TD Mr Martin Ferris of the South West Regional Authority has been "terminated" because the Kerry North representative has missed too many meetings.
The authority is a statutory body which draws up strategic planning for the Cork and Kerry area.
Mr Ferris said his attendance at meetings on the morning of the last Tuesday of each month conflicted with his Dáil commitments as he had to get to Dublin from Kerry.
He had been contacted about the procedure whereby he would lose his position if he missed too many meetings.
A spokesman for the authority cautioned against reading too much into the termination; it was simply a procedural matter, he said.
Two other TDs, Mr Gerard Murphy (FG, Cork North West) and Mr John Dennehy (FF, Cork South Central), have kept their positions on the 24-member body.
Kerry County Council this week received a letter from the director of the regional authority, Mr John McAleer, informing it that as Mr Ferris had not attended more than six executive meetings of the authority, his membership was terminated and another nominee from the council was sought.
Mr Ferris is to be succeeded on the county council by his daughter, Ms Toireasa Ní Fhearaoisa, a 23-year-old law and European studies graduate, following nomination by the party in Kerry North.
Ms Ní Fhearaoisa is a fluent Spanish speaker and has lived and worked in Spain and Mexico. She has worked with human rights lawyers in Chicago and is also a debating champion.
She will replace Mr Ferris in September.
