A THREATENED one-day strike yesterday over union recognition at Rennicks Ireland was called off by SIPTU at the last minute following the company's commitment to set up a works committee.

The company, part of the Fitzwilton group, manufactures road signs, car number plates and other prefabricated products.

Rennicks, near Mulhuddart, Co Dublin, with a workforce of 190, has agreed that if agreement cannot be reached through the new system within three months, it will allow a ballot of the workforce on union recognition and abide by the outcome.

The committee will represent union and non-union staff. This is the second time the company has tried to set up such a group to deal with employees' grievances rather than concede union recognition.

The union already represents staff in Rennicks' sister company Top Tech, which employs about 00 people and has the same managing director, Mr Michael Clifford. Yesterday Mr Clifford confirmed that the industrial action had been called off, but declined to comment on the industrial relations situation.
