A TWO DAY strike by SIPTU members in Trinity College Dublin is expected to curtail library opening and disrupt other services from Monday, writes Pat Cullen, Education Correspondent.
But college authorities say the action by over 550 administrative, security, library and cleaning staff will not affect the traditional Trinity Week announcement of new fellows and scholars, also planned for Monday. There are no lectures next week as teaching term has ended.
SIPTU has warned of further action on its claim for improved pensions. This could affect the exams which begin for 8,000 students on May 20th.
The college's latest offer, following the demand by SIPTU and other unions to retain separate college and state pensions, has been rejected in a staff ballot by 110 votes to 31. No progress was made in talks yesterday at the Labour Relations Commission on the unions' claim for pension rights for part time workers.
The college authorities have made contingency arrangements for this year's exams, and say there will be no disruption.
