Siptu will today call on the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to deploy more armed Garda escorts for cash delivery vans to curb the increasing number of raids by criminal gangs.

Union officials and members of the cash in-transit industry will also demand compulsory anti-theft technology to deter raiders.

Calls will also be made for secure parking spaces near banks and shops to accommodate cash in-transit vehicles.

The delegation to meet Mr McDowell in his St Stephen's Green offices will be headed by Siptu president Jack O'Connor.

Siptu will also ask that cash-in transit vehicles be exempt from penalty points traffic offences while making deliveries or collections and for the installation of CCTV in vans and at ATMs.

Siptu's Security Branch Organiser Kevin McMahon added: "We will also be requesting state funding for a major staff training initiative aimed at raising professional standards and increasing armed attack avoidance skills."
