Six children and two adults were injured when a fire broke out in an apartment building in Dublin's north inner city early this morning.

A woman and a child are in a serious condition in hospital. The alarm was raised shortly before 6.30 a.m. in the Nicholas House apartment building on Church Street.

Seventeen people were rescued. Two adults and six children, all believed to be between 2 and 3 years of age, were taken to hospital. Four of the children have since been discharged.

A spokeswoman for Temple Street Hospital says one child is in a critical condition and has been transferred to the national burns centre at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. Another child is in a stable condition

The injured adults, a male and a female, were taken to the Mater Hospital. The woman is being treated for serious injuries. The man is not believed to be seriously injured.
