Sunday 1 a.m.: Ryan's surplus gives more than 1,400 transfers to McDowell, putting him comfortably ahead of Gormley and in pole position for final seat. FG's Frances Fitzgerald and Labour's Ruairi Quinn subsequently elected. At 3.30 a.m. the final count distribution of Quinn's surplus puts Gormley 27 votes ahead of McDowell. PDs call for recount.

Sunday, noon: Full reexamination of ballots begins on returning officer's own initiative. Bundle of 40 McDowell votes apparently missing, but later accounted for.

Monday: Repeat reexamination of all papers begins, with party scrutineers requesting suspect papers be tagged for later adjudication.
