At least six people have been killed in fresh Hindu-Muslim clashes in India's riot-torn Gujarat state, police said.
"Two people died in police firing and one due to injuries from a sharp weapon at Gomtipur area of Ahmedabad city early on Sunday," a senior police official said today.
Ahmedabad bore the brunt of religious violence that rocked the state last month in a wave of bloody reprisals after a Muslim mob torched a train carrying Hindu activists and burned 58 people alive.
Over 750 people, mostly Muslims, died in a wave of revenge killings and sporadic clashes continue to be reported from across the state.
An official said police opened fire to disperse large groups of Hindus and Muslims who pelted stones at each other in the area which has a mixed population from the two communities.
Twelve people, including two police officials, were injured.
A curfew has been imposed in Gomtipur and army and paramilitary forces are patrolling the streets, police said.
They said three people were killed this morning in another clash between members of the two communities in Kambhat, a small town in Anand district, about 80 kilometres from Ahmedabad, the state's main city.
Police opened fire to disperse the rioting crowd which set ablaze three houses of Muslims in the area.
Police said fifty houses, belonging to Muslims were set on fire last night by rioting Hindu mobs in Adudhragam in Mehsana district.
Incidents of stone throwing and blazing of houses were also reported from several other parts of the state.
