A suicide bomber drove a car into a military jeep in Indian Kashmir today, killing six people - including himself and four soldiers - and wounding 16, police and witnesses said.
"Suddenly there was a huge explosion," witness Ghulam Mohammad said.
"I was thrown off my cycle. When I looked back I saw a lot of dust and smoke. I could hear people screaming for help."
Witnesses saw four dead bodies lying next to a damaged jeep which had been part of a military convoy. Near the jeep, another car lay destroyed and bloodstains marked the road.
Police in the turbulent Himalayan region said most of the 16 wounded were civilians and had been rushed to hospital.
"Apparently it was a suicide bomber who rammed into the army jeep. We are investigating," police officer Sayed Ahmed said, adding that one of the six dead was a civilian.
The attack by a suspected Muslim militant took place 50 metres from a Christian missionary school which put up a sign on its closed gate reading: "All students are safe".
