Six prisoners charged with involvement in a Mountjoy Prison riot during which five prison officers were held hostage are to go on trial later this year. Judge Cyril Kelly scheduled the trial for November 23rd when three of the men appeared in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday amid tight security. They were escorted to court by prison officers in riot gear. Extra prison officers and gardai were drafted in for the hearing.The case was dealt with in a vacant courtroom before Judge Kelly's busy Friday list involving 64 cases. Earlier this week the other three accused men also opted for trial in November. The accused men are Paul Ward (34), of Windmill Park, Crumlin; Stephen Galvin (25), of Kilmore Road, Knocknaheeny, Cork; Eamonn Seery (33), of Coultry Road, Ballymun; Edward Ferncombe (26), of Harelawn Drive, Clondalkin; Warren Dumbrell (24), of Emmet Road, Inchicore; and Joseph Cooper (26), of Mountain View Park, Rathfarnham. They are charged in connection with the false imprisonment of five prison officers in Mountjoy Prison on January 4th, 1997.
