Five people were killed in separate road crashes in the State and in Northern Ireland yesterday, bringing to six the total number of people who died on the roads over the weekend.

A man in his early 30s was killed after he was struck by a van just outside Murroe Village, Co Limerick at around 6.15pm.

Any witnesses to this collision are asked to contact the Gardaí at Bruff on 061-382940.

The Garda at Navan is investigating a fatal road collision on the N3 at Garlow Cross in Co Meath.

A 60-year-old male pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car at around 9.15pm. His body was taken to Navan General Hospital.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact them at 046 9079930.

A 29-year-old man died when the van he was driving crashed at Whiterath, Drumiskin, Co Louth shortly before 8am yesterday morning.

He was pronounced dead at Louth County Hospital. The man was alone in the van at the time of the crash and there was no other vehicle involved.

Gardaí later named the man as Martin Craven from Cliven, Dunleer, Co Louth.

Meanwhile, in Northern Ireland a man was killed and another seriously injured when a red Ford escort car left the Tromra Road, Cushendall, Co Antrim at around 6am.

At 10.20am, a 22-year-old man died when the Nissan 4X4 vehicle he was driving left the Glassdrumman Road in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh.

On Saturday evening, a 23-year-old woman died when her car collided with another vehicle at Cornamucklagh, Omeath, Co Louth.

Gardaí later named her as Aine Clarke, from Ferryhill Road, Newry, Co Down.

Two people in the second car were taken by ambulance to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, where their injuries are said are not to be life-threatening.

The death occurred on Saturday of Jerome Mone (6) who died in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children following a crash on the Red Lion Road in Loughgall, Co Armagh on Thursday.

The total number of people who have died on the State's roads this year is 440.
