Six kilos of base amphetamine (speed) were recovered last night following a surveillance operation. No arrests have been made and a garda spokesman said the investigation was continuing.

He added that the seizure was the result of an ongoing operation in the drugs scene in Athlone.

Meanwhile a 27-year-old man was arrested after drugs worth over €200,000 were recovered during a raid on a house in the Ballyfermot area of Dublin last night.

Heroin with a street value of €200,000 was seized along with €5,000 worth of cannabis and €2,000 worth of ecstasy.

The man is being held under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act at Ronanstown Garda Station.
