Police fear the death toll from a fire at a seaside hotel in Cornwall this morning could rise as they continue to search for six missing guests.
One person has died and six remain unaccounted for after a blaze ripped through the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall.
When fire broke out just after midnight it is believed 90 people were in the building. Four people remain in hospital in a serious condition.
Demolition crews have now moved on to the site to make it safe and enable fire investigators to search for a cause.
Guests staying at the 54-room Penhallow and two adjoining hotels were evacuated after the flames spread under the roof. More than 100 firefighters battled the fire at the four-storey seafront hotel on Saturday morning after a member of staff called 999.
Chief Constable Stephen Otter said concerns about the missing people were growing.
"One of the difficulties we have at the moment is going through the process of interviewing everyone who has come out," he said.
"The longer we go on the more concerned we become for the welfare of those people. We have to investigate what happened along with the fire service and that will take time.
"The people in hospital are suffering from injuries from falling down, burns and the elderly people are suffering from the trauma of the whole thing."
He confirmed the man who had died had jumped from a second floor window.
